According to this recent Daily Record article attendances are up and everybody would be celebrating. However, if you dig a little deeper into these figures it plain for all to see that this “growth” comes around due to the redistribution though changes in the better supported teams in the league. There is nothing to suggest that there is any long term growth in prospect anytime soon for most clubs and no strategic plan from the SPFL to try to build the business of football.
If a club like Hamilton Accies or Inverness Caledonian Thistle are relegated and replaced by Hibernian then guess what- attendances will increase again next season. Does that mean things are improving- let us not kid ourselves. Football needs to take heed, in the week that the organised Christian Religion in Scotland had said it had lost 50% of its “audience” in the last 30 years we in football need to start attracting a new audience and soon!
