Do we need an Independent Regulator to ensure ALL of the game is looked after?

With our two big clubs showing an unusually strong performance in Europe this season the whole of the game in Scotland celebrates that success .It is not just about the prestige of the game that it brings but it is also applauded  for the money that it generates not just for Celtic and Rangers but with the UEFA consolidation payments that filter into the wider game.

Across Europe that money flows into the game  and is used in a range of ways. In Germany and in Belgium the money is fed into the structures that support the whole game where the belief is that everyone in the game should benefit from what is in essence the profits of TV and sponsorship money. Sadly in Scotland the money ( £1.6m per club) which is an amount not to be sniffed at, stays in the Premiership. In an excellent article Matthew Lindsay at the Herald argues that the failure to feed the whole game in Scotland is not just a missed opportunity to benefit the whole game from top to bottom. He say that it is in essence making the top league in Scotland a close shop. Turkeys as we all know don’t  vote for Christmas and the Premiership clubs will want to keep every penny they are offered and the clubs below  are not allowed to vote on how the money is distributed. Very much a typical Scottish Football conundrum you could say.

Maybe the game changer moment would come with an Independent Regulator who as is proposed in England would look to ensure the fairer distribution of wealth  through the pyramid. Maybe in Scotland clubs below the Premiership will support and Independent Regulator who has such powers in Scotland?
