BILLY BREMNER MEMORIAL JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN
Date: 3rd April 2025
You may have seen a lot of speculation online and in the media about League Reconstruction in the last few days. The SFSA understands that despite what you may have read, nothing is likely to happen for quite some time, simply because the whole issue is so damned complicated that it would take the judgement of an army of Solomons to come up with a scheme that pleased everyone AND made as much money as is currently being brought into the game in Scotland.
That’s not to say that we don’t think the issues aren’t being discussed at the SPFL (they are), however, one thing we are sure of is that if and when we get closer to this happening then the fans need to be involved.
The BBC’s Brian McLauchlan has written about this on Wednesday (2nd April), and made a raft of sensible points (although he was let down by the BBC’s graphics department – as shown above – who seem to think that before 1975 there were two Divisions of 16 teams and that after 1975 there was a 10-12-12 system – there was actually a First Division of 18 teams and a Second Division of 20 teams, which morphed into three leagues of 10-14-14).
As always, a key issue is whether the fans get a say in all this. Here, Mr McLauchlan wrote:
“Do fans not get a say?
It’s unlikely the SPFL will ask fans but it is plausible that clubs – particularly those such as Hearts and Motherwell who are fan owned – could canvass their own supporters to establish what they would like.
Other clubs may well do it too, as there is a realisation that these are the customers who bring in the much-needed revenue.
Whether they listen to them or not is another issue.”
We beg to differ. The SFSA will be there to gauge opinion, take the temperature of the debate – and work with the football authorities to ensure your voices are heard. We think there is a long, long way to go before any change actually happens (if, indeed, it ever does), but if it does then the fans need to be listened to…
And the best way you can make your voice heard is by joining us – which you can do at this link: https://scottishfsa.org/join-the-sfsa/
