Mr. Christie Dreams…

Date: 9th June 2024

He awoke with a start…

Sweat dripping down his back, with a nervy startled expression on his face, Mr. Christie rose from his bed and made his way across his room to the window.

It was a frosty feeling June morning, and he pulled the curtains back slowly…

Fearing the worst he peered outside to find…

Sunshine…

Picture the scene…

2024.

Mr. Christie is in a Travelodge, abroad.

He is ready for his big day. A possible 49th…

And the omens are all good.

Since he began working for the company in 2017, he had worked all over the shop, had been able to plug gaps wherever he was asked to. Recognition had come in that very first year with his first. But 47 followed.

Not one after the other. He knew how fortunate he had been to get the first ten. The graft, the sweat, hard labour he had put in to gather them up into double figures, but the recognition had been there. People actually admired him.

It had not been easy, and he had had to tour the country for that recognition, including having to spend a sizable period of time down south, in England.

But he had not minded. Had quite enjoyed it. Had actually thrived.

After all, if he had not done well, he would not now been in an international Travelodge, looking out upon a Portuguese vista and knowing that today he could make it 49.

Life, however, is not filled with guarantees. A highlander who made a fair fist of it in Glasgow and Aberdeen he had been on the south coast of England for four long and tough years, mixing it with the giants of English organisations and holding his own.

But his country had recognised him and made him who he was.

A Scot making waves in Bournemouth.

At first people had scoffed at him, as he had not managed to make it to one of the big cities like Newcastle, Liverpool or even London. One of his contemporaries, Mr. Tierney had made it to London. And for a moment, Mr. Christie wondered if he had been able to make the giant leap to a bigger city, he would have made his milestone long before now.

50…

As he turned with that thought in his head, he caught sight of himself in the mirror.

No, he needed to be a big fish in a small pond to make a splash he thought. Bournemouth suited him and making himself available to fight contests here in Portugal against the Gibraltar boys, or to

return home and be in Glasgow to face off the Finnish whilst preparing himself and with the rest – the big one. Munich in Germany.

He hoped Alan McInally would be there to hand him his next milestone. He was, after all, the last Scot to make it big in Munchen…

But it was time to dress and get ready for breakfast… two more dry runs before the big one. And so Mr. Christie Holiday Rep Club 18 to oany age for the Bournemouth branch of the Scottish Funtime Agency is ready to face the day ahead. 90 minutes of competition including the ballpark, water park and under 5s mid-morning walk around the resort before the big kid’s European event where all the best in Europe shall be present and Mr. Christie hopes to have been in the national squad competing for Scotland for the 50th time…

It’s his dream. And every morning for the past few months he has awoken with it making him sweat, feeling the anticipation and deary me… excitement of it… You might even say he was optimistic…

Whilst the author asserts his right to this as an original piece of work there is no evidence that Ryan Christie has ever worked as a holiday rep, unless you know differently, so, this is clearly a piece of fiction, though the dreams of Ryan Christie have been hinted at.

The fact is that Ryan Christie, an international player since 2017 is homing in on 50 caps for his country. When the BBC pointed this out to him, he replied to them, “I know that, believe me. I’ve been dreaming about it for the last couple of months.” When asked if we have a chance of going further than ever before, Christie responded, “That’s got to be the aim. The gaffer keeps telling us if we do that, we become the most successful Scottish team in history. The results we’ve had against big teams, especially in qualifying, will boost confidence. We put in two great performances against Spain and Norway, so you’ve got to realise that we’ve done it before, and we have the ability to do it again. You just want to do your country proud. You have so many Scots flying over and we want to give them something to cheer about, to send them back with good memories. That falls on us. That’s the kind of pressure we love.” Now THAT is a dream, we are all having…
