Front and centre of the Scottish March of the Day fundraising walk scheduled for October 10-12 is Martin Johnston. Martin enjoyed a distinguished career as a semi-professional footballer with Cove Rangers, Brechin City, Peterhead, and Elgin City until the age of 35. At the age of 40, following an extended period of physical changes, Martin was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Now 47, he, his wife Jenny, and their children Calum and Sophie are facing the ongoing challenges of this currently incurable disease.

After coming to terms with the diagnosis, Martin and his family dedicated themselves to raising funds for MND charities. This event is supported by two prominent organisations: the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, established by former footballer Stephen Darby and Chris Rimmer, a former British serviceman; and the My Name5 Doddie Foundation, founded by Scottish Rugby Union legend Doddie Weir.
Both Stephen and Doddie recognised the invaluable support provided by teammates in difficult times. Martin has enlisted the help of five former teammates and friends—Jamie Lennox, Mark Perry, Andy Gibson, Barry Thompson, and Kevin Tindal—who will be accompanying him on this walk. Kevin has also shared his perspective on his motivation for participating.
“Martin was a superb player and a great teammate, someone that could produce a moment of class to win a game when you least expected it. I’ve had hundreds of teammates over my football career and consider Martin one of my closest friends, our wives are friends too.
“I’m taking part to raise awareness and funds to support research into possible treatments and ultimately a cure to try to improve the lives of people like Martin and their families.”
