SFSA CALLS FOR SFA TO RECONSIDER CUP FINAL TIMING

DATE: 4/5/2023

  • Scotland’s national independent fans organisation, the SFSA, is calling for the SFA to reconsider the unpopular Cup Final Kick off time
  • If the game is being moved for financial benefit then tell us what these benefits are and share the “benefits” by providing transport options for supporters
  • Calls for SFA to look at the provision of football special trains to Inverness that could help fans get home after the game
  • Calls for the SFA to consult with fans when decisions are made that have an impact on fans

The Scottish Football Supporters Association note the announcement that the kick off time for the Scottish Cup Final has been moved for the benefit of television audience. We of course completely understand the importance of television revenue, but we believe decisions like this should not give the TV audience preference over fans of clubs who spend considerable time and money to support their team at the turnstiles.

As the national organisation that represents ordinary football supporters, the length and breadth of the country, we find it incredulous that  the views of fans wanting to attend Scotland’s showpiece football event have been ignored by the football authorities. The decision has already been criticised by both Celtic FC and Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC and we have seen significant backlash from supporters of both clubs. Once again a TV audience is taking priority over fans who support the game at the turnstiles. It is an unacceptable way to treat the most loyal of special “customers”.

Stuart Murphy, CEO of the Scottish Football Supporters Association said, “This is just wrong and bad news for all the fans. We have to ask several  questions. Why now? The Cup finals have clashed for years so what has changed this year? We also have to ask the question just who is making these decisions and who is benefiting from moving the fixture, as is certainly is not the fans.

It is really annoying to see  a complete lack of consultation on major issues that have an impact on fans. We hope that the SFA now try to minimise the damage that this decision has made and start looking at options that will help Inverness fans in particular get home after the game via public transport. This is essential given that the kick off times will force many fans to travel by car which in its own right will have an additional cost and a significant additional environmental impact .”
