Scottish Football Backs the MND Community
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) has affected many individuals, including notable footballers such as Jimmy Johnstone, Fernando Rickson, and David Hagan. Seven years ago, former Cove Rangers and Brechin City player Martin Johnston was diagnosed with the condition.
A group of former professionals—including John McGinlay, Andy Walker, Mark Perry, Kevin Tindal, Andy Gibson, and Filipe Morais—will participate in the Scottish March of the Day from October 10th to 12th. This event entails a continuous 150-mile walk over 49 hours, commencing in Motherwell and concluding in Murrayfield, with visits to 20 additional football grounds en route. At each club, participants will be received pitchside for photographs. Clubs so far on board include Rangers, Hearts, Motherwell, Spartans, Partick Thistle, Falkirk, Airdrie, and Cumbernauld United, with many further clubs expected to join. The initiative is sponsored by PFA Scotland and supported by the SPFL Trust and the Scottish Football Supporters Association. Clubs not on the direct route, such as Montrose, Arbroath, and Brechin City, have also pledged their support.
This event is organised by the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation in partnership with the Scottish Football Supporters Association and the My Name5 Doddie Foundation, established by former Scottish Rugby international Doddie Weir.
Football fans are encouraged to join any of the daytime stages of the walk, either individually or in teams of up to six. The entry fee is £10 per person, which includes a commemorative t-shirt. Proceeds will contribute to ongoing research into a cure for MND.
In addition, companies can sponsor stages for just £250 and get their name and logo on t-shirts and banners.
Collective action from football supporters can provide significant support to those affected by MND. Let’s attack MND together.
