Underneath the radar…
Donald C Stewart
A sketchy and humorous look at the outpourings of the great, the good and the not so good of Scottish fitba’ by Donald C Stewart. Readers are warned that if they take this seriously then therapy is available – just let us know where you find it so we can pass it on to others…
Heard the one about an Auld Firm victory that dragged The Rangers back into title contention? Apparently not many of the media outlets heard it either…
And so, once upon a Friday night, The Rangers managed to get out of a rotten run of form in the league, having lost to the likes of Hibs and Hearts in recent weeks, The Rangers had a win over the Glasgow Celtic.
Unfortunately, The Glasgow Celtic, who were the home team did not rule the roost at Parkhead, and The Rangers ran out worthy winners.
Such a sentence has been a rare find in the narrative of The Rangers in season 2025/26.
The game included a late winner which dragged The Rangers back into the Premier League title race, with a crucial win. Played on a Friday evening which was before the Saturday, where the league leaders could move nine points clear of both Rangers and Celtic if they beat Montrose on the Sunday. (And they did…)
Hibs and Hearts also played each other over the weekend in a derby-filled opportunity, for one side of the city to gain advantage over the other in the east. (Hearts won 3-1 against the defending champions over in Leith – the east replicated the west!)
But the lack of coverage was hardly remarked upon for this floodlit derby. After all this was only the Scottish Women’s Premier League and not the Boys or even the Bhoys. Both Boys/Bhoys are doing a quite different dance.
However, the excitement is hotting up across Glasgow and Edinburgh, as Hibs, Hearts, Glasgow City, The Rangers and The Glasgow Celtic, are currently fighting it at the top of the league. Competition? You could hardly credit it.
Leanne Crichton’s move from her pundit duties into being the manager of The Rangers seemed to be a step too far for her, given their run of recent form, however, a win against their biggest rivals will no doubt boost her chances of making it at least to the end of this season.
But they are both nearly nine points behind the behemoth that is Glasgow City.
Glasgow City have struggled to maintain not only their form, but also their principal place at the top of Scottish women’s football. Last season Hibs won the league and The Rangers bagged both domestic cups. As for this year? Imagine healthy competition in a Scottish Premiership title race? As if…
Not being dependant on the BIG TWO at the top seems to help a great deal with real competition. This is according to those in the know. Now, just to be clear, there are a few who know, but not many or nearly enough notice that they should know and then make other people aware that they should also know. You know?
Of course, pictures of the game between The Rangers players and the hooped jerseys of The Glasgow Celtic might have given the game away – plenty of vacant seats in the background…
Scottish women’s football has not yet managed the depth of attendance at matches that others have attracted.
It would be pretty decent to see more fans coming to see them play. However, it is going to take a little bit more than a Friday night seven goal thriller, you think… Some do, some don’t…
What else can they bleeding well do, was the unasked question from the many in the Scottish women’s game. Silence often comes the response.
Scottish women’s football has shown the way in recent past to the men just how to get into major tournaments, although now there’s a bit of a stutter and a falter as they try and get into the next major tourney.
For the men, they managed a straight run into the World Cup next year.
As for the women, further Friday night games, as well as Saturdays and Sundays will give people the opportunity to double up their viewing pleasure as football fans.
Excitement is found across the country with highly skilled women running about chasing a wee ball, trying to get into a big net, but don’t depend on too many media outlets to alert you. Just have a go and support the women’s game.
