Harry whose side are you on?

By Donald C Stewart

A sketchy and humorous look at the outpourings of the great, the good and the not so good of Scottish fitba’ by Donald C Stewart. Readers are warned that if they take this seriously then therapy is available – just let us know where you find it so we can pass it on to others…

In the end they just couldn’t manage it and for the second year in a row Ross County have fallen through the divisions like Brechin City once did. They are trying their best to put a brave face on it, but like Kelty Hearts in League One, and Edinburgh City in League Two, the question nobody has ever asked is, if he were around now, who would Harry Houdini support and would it include a team in Edinburgh, Dingwall or Hamilton or who…

I think I know… and it aint anywhere near West Lothian as Livingston are doomed, and the Buddies look forlorn into the bargain. Marvin Bartley done his own disappearing act as, without Ian McCall in his backroom staff, there was no chance he was going to climb their way out of the relegation spot in the Premiership.

So, who has had the Houdini factor?

The answer may well surprise and delight Stephen Robinson…

Houdini is not a Paisley Buddy but then again neither’s Robinson anymore…

It could be argued he would have been in the Rugby Park stands cheering on the Killie, but no, that’s not who he would support at all!

Houdini would join the Aberdeen faithful. That’s because John Henry Anderson, known as The Great Wizard of the North, who died in the same year as Houdini was born, was a huge influence on the American escapologist.

Of course, they never met, but when did logic dictate affiliation!?

You see, Houdini did go to Aberdeen, and went to Anderson’s grave, noted it was not in the best of fettle and started to pay for its upkeep. This is the 100th anniversary of the Aberdeen Magical Society so the very fact that Houdini has a connection with the city may have helped both Cove Rangers and Aberdeen this year.

As for Livingston, as Private Fraser on Dad’s Army foretold, they were doomed! The West Lothian side are to slip back down from whence they came after a single season in the topflight. Bartley may have found his own escape route, will David Martindale? Or, given their commitment to the club, loyalty shall see him prepare their serious challenge in the Championship next year to return back to the land of milk, honey, keech and despair?

Who knows but Houdini aside, it all comes down to one game. Anyone suggesting that the other night, Celtic and Motherwell were playing last goal’s the winner can join Messrs McInnes and McCoist in disparaging the game… I think there are too many in charge doing it without any help from me…
