SFSA NEWS RELEASE

National Fans Organisation honours Scottish football legends with Blue Plaque Scheme

DATE: 5/3/2026

  • Scotland’s national independent fans organisation, the Scottish Football Supporters’ Association (SFSA), is celebrating the most significant football figures by launching a Blue Plaque scheme for Scottish Football.
  • The scheme follows the launch of the 1st in honour of Billy Bremner where he was born in the Raploch, Stirling.
  • Jimmy Bone is the next football icon to be honoured.
  • The pilot scheme will allow for other nominations to follow to be considered by the SFSA Blue Plaque selection committee.
  • In the fullness of time a digital map will allow all sites of historical interest to be identified via a web /app.

The SFSA, are delighted to announce the launch of a major new programme that celebrates and honours significant people who have contributed to our game.

Following on from the successful launch of the Billy Bremner Blue Plaque at Raploch in Stirling the SFSA were asked to explore options for several other icons of our game. As a result of this research and development the scheme will officially be launched on March 8th.

The scheme will allow clubs, supporters or family or friends to nominate a person to be considered for the honour. The scheme is open to all members of the football family with the only criteria being that they have seen to have contributed to the game locally or nationally and have been born in Scotland. The blue plaque will be placed near a place of significance that resonates with the nominee.

A selection committee of figures from the game is in the process of being established which will include well known Broadcaster Richard Gordon and former Scotland Internationalist Dave McPherson.

Dave said “I am delighted to support this scheme and am looking forward to our team reviewing the nominations. There are many both living and dead who I believe deserve this accolade in the communities from where they came.”

The 8th of March has been chosen a funding pilot Scheme to tie in with the Scottish Cup game where St. Mirren will host Partick Thistle in the Quarter Final of the national tournament.

Project Manager for the SFSA, Alexander Gibb said, “We have chosen the St. Mirren v Partick Thistle game as Jimmy Bone was a legendary figure at both clubs and he was instrumental in the development of the scheme. It will allow the fans of both clubs the opportunity to help fund the Jimmy Bone Blue Plaque which will become our second placement. near where he was born. Jimmy was a Hall of Fame player for Arbroath and Norwich City too and a legendary striker for Hearts so we are sure there will be fans of all those clubs wanting to help us commemorate him.”
