Keep Right On Till the End
By Donald C Stewart
A sketchy and humorous look at the outpourings of the great, the good and the not so good of Scottish fitba’ by Donald C Stewart. Readers are warned that if they take this seriously then therapy is available – just let us know where you find it so we can pass it on to others…
As the men’s national team were getting ready to take on the might of Japan, Andy Robertson opined that his time with the national squad has kept him going at times this season.
Given that the national squad has come up for a number of recent criticisms, followed by audible boos at Hampden, this could have been described as odd. At any other time, in any other season….
Not having won a friendly for a decade kept going, like Andy, but folk hope the defeats will stop and Robertson will just keep right on going…
For a long time, the idea that playing for your country was going to keep you in love with football as a Scot, would have been seen as lunacy, especially under previous managers, including Bertie Vogts.
The number of caps that were given out by Vogts during his time as Scotland manager can be counted, unfortunately, on the hands of most people who turned up at Hampden to watch the team play.
However, Robertson has had a year like no other.
Towards the end of this season, he is going to have to make a decision as to where he’s playing his football next year, as it looks likely that Liverpool are not going to offer him a renewed contract,
Given that his big mate Mo Salah is also leaving, perhaps Robertson is going to join with him, hold hands and skip off into the Saudi Arabian sunset, as both ply their trade in the Middle East.
Sympathy over Roberston’s plight may include some Rangers and Celtic fans who have gone through the Russell Martin and Wilfried Nancy periods. Neither of them managed to find sufficient energy to light single blades of heather, never mind large fields of it.
On top of that, of course, anybody in Livingston who has seen Davie Martindale’s side struggle this year will also opine that they could have done with a little bit of light relief at the beginning of the season to help them more cheerful towards the end of it.
Over in Paisley, the Buddies did have a bizarre midpoint where they won a cup, but don’t seem to be able to win much else before losing their talisman, Steven Robinson, up the road to Aberdeen.
Aberdeen, of course, have not managed to find a great deal of cheer, either under the Christmas tree or indeed once they saw the departure of Jimmy Thelin, however, perhaps Robinson is going to give them something to laugh about at the other side of everybody else’s face come August.
Having said that, of course, those who have contributed to Robertson’s career, whether it be coaches at Queen’s Park, those who saw him develop, at Dundee United or his blossoming at Hull before he found himself winning major trophies at Anfield, will have followed his career with such pride.
We all know that wherever Robertson ends up next year, it’s going to help increase the number of caps that he has under his belt or on the top of his head, depending on where he keeps them.
Rumours that Kenny Dalgleish, who currently holds the all-time appearance record for Scotland at 102 is looking for a decent set of boots to make a comeback have been denied by all apart from one who said, “mebbes aye, mebbes naw”…
