“Life is more important than any job.” Kenny Dalglish’s quiet words anchor Asif Kapadia’s latest documentary.
Kapadia, an Oscar-winning director, has crafted a 104-minute documentary celebrating ‘King Kenny’, the Celtic, Liverpool, and Scotland legend.
The film moves from the 74-year-old’s Glasgow childhood to his resignation as Liverpool manager in 1991. Archive footage illustrates the journey while Dalglish’s own voice tells the story.
Dalglish was unquestionably one of the greatest players of his era, and as a manager he continued that success. It is easy to see why the city of Liverpool lauds him today. Yet the heart of the film isn’t about silverware and records.
Dalglish is described as “the father of the city,” having experienced first-hand Liverpool’s joys and tragedies alike. European Cups, Heysel, Hillsborough, he doesn’t hold back, confronting these moments with honesty.
Kapadia also shows Dalglish’s leadership off the pitch. His 1991 resignation, a quiet acknowledgment of a mental health battle, resonates even today.
This film is a tribute to a man whose footballing genius and empathy for all those he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with are inseparable.
Kenny Dalglish is in cinemas on 29 and 30 October only and comes to Prime Video on 4 November.
