BILLY BREMNER MEMORIAL JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN
Date: 25th November 2024
In the penultimate paragraph of my last article on this subject, I asked the question, “are we seriously going to wait until someone gets very badly injured or killed?” Well, now we don’t have to wait.
Last December a flare was thrown from a group of Olympiacos ultras in following a volleyball match in Athens. Unsurprisingly, there were clashes with the police during this episode. A 31-year-old police officer was struck in the thigh by a flare. He was taken to hospital, where he died three weeks later. Days later, and you can be sure that the Greek polis, like ours, don’t take kindly to their own being attacked and killed, the authorities arrested 167 people suspected of being involved in the officer’s death. As a result, 25 of those were placed in pre-trial detention, including an 18-year-old accused of launching the flare. Are we seriously prepared to wait for this to happen here…?
