BILLY BREMNER MEMORIAL JOIN OUR CAMPAIGN
Date: 9th March 2025
Right where it should be
Cooncill telly.
Do you not hae mind o it?
Everybody sitting round the television watching of an evening from roundabout teatime and the dishes have been done to the point at which your father turned to you and said bedtime as the big light got put out?
It is a nostalgic piece of memory that does come up frequently. I remember somebody once telling me during the first time we watched The Royle Family that it was unlikely that any family would ever sit around the television in that manner. I looked at them askance and realised that the difference between us was more than just that we had different experiences. The class divide was never so much and so obvious.
In terms of Scottish football over the last few years supporters have had to deal with a myriad of different subscription terms and organisations that have bought the rights to the sweet game.
But now the BBC, agreeing a contract to broadcast live all of Scotland’s main international football matches, on their way to the 2026 World Cup, should be not just welcoming that news but hopefully able to get behind our team to return to the rightful place that many of us growing up thought that Scotland always belonged in – major competitions.
But money talks.
The fact is, that the Scottish Football Association have a product that they can sell out to various companies willing to pay for it. As long as advertisers think that putting something on during a Scotland vs. whoever match is worth their cash then broadcasters are likely to come in and pay handsomely for the product. Then the Scottish Football Association can take that money and disperse it amongst the hungry chicks of Scotland. Scottish football is always looking for a bit of a bung to ensure that their community activities, or their youth squad, or the ailing infrastructure that is supporting an ailing football club on the field is brought more up to date.
And so, beginning with the first leg of the nation’s league playoff in Greece, this month the BBC shall be able to show us not just our own frailties but hopefully the success that Steve Clark should continue to have on the pitch. Added with the deal is Wales and Northern Ireland and therefore for the first time, apparently, the BBC have got the three nations on the television free to air.
it is really important that whilst many are suggesting that They should withhold their BBC license fee because they feel that the bipartisan nature BBC politics does not suit their idea of an independent state led broadcaster are reminded that that the BBC have found the cash to doing something like this. It’s not going to come cheap and it’s not going to be something that will continue unless there is some kind of support for it.
Director Hayley Valentine of BBC Scotland is to be commended as indeed as Ian Maxwell – those are words that I never thought I would utter or write down on a blank sheet of paper this week! But I am, like Ian Maxwell, delighted that the men’s national team is going to be on the television free on the council telly for everybody to enjoy.
All we need now is to qualify…
If only we werenae Scotland…
