Shhhh…
By Donald C Stewart
A sketchy and humorous look at the outpourings of the great, the good and the not so good of Scottish fitba’ by Donald C Stewart. Readers are warned that if they take this seriously then therapy is available – just let us know where you find it so we can pass it on to others…
Reports have emerged after hearing an interview with their manager, reported in the Scottish Sun that Motherwell players turned up at Motherwell’s Lending Library for training.
Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou had been quizzed over links with the future Celtic job and responded that everybody needs a bit of peace and quiet.
Motherwell players had taken this as an indication that they had to go to training at a place where there was constant peace and quiet.
Reports, emanating from Coatbridge, emerged that the library, which was open, was completely and utterly empty. Immediately people from Motherwell apparently and allegedly poured cold water on such a ludicrous idea because they claimed that nobody knew they had a library.
The question was asked of Askou because, as people know, St Martin of O’Neill will leave Parkhead at the end of the season. Askou was asked whether he felt that he had a long-term future at Motherwell, with current speculation being he will be moving to Parkhead, and this was causing some concern in Lanarkshire – or at least parts of it. He responded that he could not end speculation and it was just part and parcel of the game and everybody had to have a peace and quiet to get on with it.
Motherwell fans will be hoping that his peace and quiet will end up with a contract under his nose with a pen inked ready for him to sign and stay. There is always speculation around anybody who goes to any premiership club outside of Glasgow, that they shall end up being touted for one of the big jobs. Apparently, Aberdeen is not in the running for Askou…
As for Celtic, St Martin of O’Neill, although he has expressed that he is enjoying and loving what he’s got and until they put the big wooden lid on top of him, he will miss football, there is very likely little chance that he will remain at Celtic beyond May of this year.
Askou in the meantime coming in after German Michael Wiener left Motherwell to go off and do something else in Germany has been an absolute revelation and a star for the Steelmen.
They are now just behind the top three, and some have suggested that they may be realistic premiership title contenders. Being 4 points behind The Rangers with one game in hand would still mean that they would have to see a spectacular collapse, not just of Hearts, but of the Old Firm in front of them.
Not that the Old Firm can count on having a safe passage through the rest of the season, given their recent problems in the premiership.
But what Askou certainly has in hand is how to turn a sleeping giant of Scottish football into a recognisable and potent force.
The weekend game against Dundee is now the most important game of the season – it’s the game in hand they have over the rest. Of course, as we all know as soon as people get a sniff that somebody is being touted for a job, there’s every possibility that players will start to look elsewhere. The greatest concern is if the gaffer is not going to be here, maybe they will jump ship too. Breaking up the Motherwell team would not be a positive given the way that it’s playing at the moment.
Of course, there is no evidence that the Motherwell player’s WhatsApp group was filled with questions around what a library is nor that several googled Waterstones…
