SFSA BLUE PLAQUES LAUNCH FIND OUT MORE

Starting at the beginning by Denis Frize

Date: 17th September 2025

Let’s start off at the very beginning.

In 1866 a group of men met at the Freemasons’ Tavern, Great Queen StreeLLondon.

“Our task”, said the Chairman , ” is to formulate rules for the game we love.”

The game was Association Football.

Among the opening rules was decreed:

The winning team shall be the one that scores more goals

That rule has not changed. It does not say that there will points for cunning plans or good intentions or even skilful play.. Or even skilful excuses. You only win matches if you score more goals than the other eleven.

So the rule is valid for every team playing in Scotland this coming week.

My SFA Coaching certificate, signed by Craig Brown and Jim Farry, is just above my right shoulder as I type.

Far be it from me to suggest that other coaches might follow example, but I always made sure that the rule was

prominently displayed above the teams’  changing area. It works.

The only explanation the public want and deserve is a 6-0 victory.

That rule has not changed.
