An opening day draw at Motherwell and the manager rips into his players.
Oh no, wait a minute, that was last year.
An opening day draw against Dundee United, and the manager refuses to rip into his players.
That’s more like it.
The Derek McInnes era at Rangers, according to many, started underwhelmingly as they went to Tannadice and they ended up with a draw. Their 1-1 scoreline was put to McInnes as being just a repeat of the previous year to which he responded, “I’m not really interested in what’s happened previously.”
Given that Rangers Football Club are built on history and tradition it doesn’t seem a particularly smart comment but there again McInnes was only talking about last season. Previous few seasons are incredibly important to Rangers Football Club. They have not won a league title in so long that the Rangers tours are beginning to feel more nostalgic than current. McInnes being brought in to shore up at the Rangers football club is important because he has a history with the club, therefore, he is somebody who is really interested in what happened in the past – he was there for some of it. Maybe not yesterday, but certainly several days before.
And so, I wondered what else would Derek McInnes not be interested in what happened previously?
Could it be that if he made an entrance on the political stage that he would not be interested in what happened previously? Would his pitch be, keep with me I don’t know what happened?
Or if he was going to be sent as a peacekeeper to the Middle East or Ukraine or somewhere in Central America where Donald J. Trump may have nefarious interests that he wouldn’t be interested in wars that are centuries old.
Or alternatively, if he goes to a Battle of the Boyne celebration, not of course that Rangers Football Club would indulge in such a thing these days being a modern 2026 woke type of institution, would he no want to know what happened. Maybe he already knows.
It’s unfair to take something that McInnes said after his first competitive Scottish game in charge of his new club The Rangers but it sets up a fascinating season.
Across the city Celtic have gone full on Back to the Future with their Doc lookalike, the Sainted Martin Of the Neill. The man who does not need third time lucky for he got it all second time around!
Few people are giving Rangers much of a chance this year, but this feels like a transitional phase for both clubs so keeping abreast of what happened before is critical to avoid it happening in the future.
Perhaps though McInnes will be proven right, that it doesn’t matter what happened in the past, it matters what happens in the present and the future. And he is certainly, as he has proven at Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hearts, somebody who has one eye on the present constantly.
