ALEX SMITH insists its a ‘huge honour’ to be inducted into the new City of Stirling Football Hall of Fame alongside best pals Billy Bremner and Jimmy Bone.
Former St Mirren, Aberdeen and Stirling Albion boss Smith’s impressive achievements in the dugout will be recognised in the new Hall of Fame later this month.
Now living in Brisbane after emigrating in 2018, the hugely respected figure is delighted to be the first manager recognised.
And even though the 86-year-old is now Down Under, Smith insists he’s always been proud of his Stirling roots.
Duncan Ferguson and Jimmy Ryan complete the first five additions and Smith said: “To be the first manager inducted into this new Hall of Fame is fabulous.
“I was from Cowie, Billy was from the Raploch and Jimmy was from Fallin.
“We were all very close friends, so to be inducted alongside both of them means a great deal to me.
“Duncan was a brilliant player, who always reminded me he was one of the few Stirling boys I didn’t know about until he’d already left and signed for Dundee United!
“I was at a reserve game and Jim McLean told me he had a new boy in from Stirling. I couldn’t believe I’d missed him, but I was so pleased to see the career he went on to have.
“He was very much like Billy, an outstanding player and tremendous character.
“They all went and made a huge impact in England and that makes me so proud.
“It says a lot about the area and we all had a lifelong pride in our Stirling roots.”
Smith began his coaching career with Stenhousemuir in 1968 before spending a lengthy 12-year stint with the Binos.
The former Dundee United and Ross County boss credits the great Bob Shankly for helping develop his nous in the dugout at Annfield, that led to silverware success with the Dons and the Buddies.
Smith won the Scottish Cup with both clubs and said: “I massively developed as a manager at Stirling and a lot of that came from working alongside Bob.
“He was the general manager and I spent nine years with him there, with him mentoring and developing me.
“He took Dundee to the semi-finals of the European Cup and won a league title with them, so to learn from him every day was just fantastic.
“He was an Ayrshire guy, a strong character who would call a spade a spade.
“He was also very fair, was great pals with Stein and that was my education to deal with almost every situation you could throw at a manager.
“I still try to pass on the knowledge I have to young managers coming through now and hopefully another generation of excellent new Scottish coaches will develop.”
The City of Stirling Football Hall of Fame fundraising dinner is taking place at Stirling Rugby Club on Friday, August 28th.
Scottish football legend Dick Campbell will help launch a new book on former Partick Thistle and St Mirren star Jimmy Bone, written by journalist Ben Ramage, as the former striker is inducted into the new Hall of Fame.
The event will also mark the return of Ferguson to speak in his home city for the very first time.
