How green and sustainable is Scottish football?

Date: 28th May 2025

The majority of us are concerned about climate change. Some of us even pay to offset our carbon footprint, especially when we fly abroad on holiday. Football, for obvious reasons, consumes a lot of energy (and not just shouting at a match!).  Thousands of fans travel every week during the season to see their clubs, home and away.  Clubs have had to suffer from huge increases in the cost of energy – and those floodlights don’t work without it.  Most of us probably don’t know how much is or is not being done by the football industry to combat climate change and improve sustainability.

Consequently, the SFSA has organised this survey, which is being run in conjunction with the Scottish Government’s Domestic Climate Change Division and The Greener Travel Company, to try to  find out what measure fans would like to see introduced to help improve clubs’ sustainability and reduce their environmental impact.
