MAKE SCOTTISH FOOTBALL COUNT AT THE ELECTIONS
The 2026 Scottish Parliament election is due to be held on Thursday 7 May 2026, and will elect 129 members to the Scottish Parliament. SFSA wants to make sure that fans’ voices are heard by candidates from the different political parties loud and clear.
While football will not be a headline priority during election campaigning, which will begin in earnest at the end of this month when Parliamentary business ends until the poll takes place, we know that MSPs (Members of the Scottish Parliament) recognise that our national game is important for voters, communities, businesses and the economy as a whole.
Next week we will be launching our ‘Vote Football’ initiative – urging supporters across the country to lobby candidates in their own constituencies, and suggesting five key questions that you can ask them: on the doorstep, by email, or at the various public ‘hustings’ that will be organised in different areas.
The political parties will also be publishing their manifestos next month. These are the proposals they are putting before voters for the policies they want to implement. As the national fans’ body, SFSA is writing nationally to all parties who will be standing candidates in the Scottish Parliament election.
We are putting to them a two-page ‘Put Fans First’ Scottish football manifesto of our own, based on the supporters’ survey that you answered recently, and our ground-breaking Rebuilding Scottish Football report. We will feature this in these newsletters from now until the election on 7 May.
But what we are asking for is summarised in a short sentence which we are urging ALL political parties to put in their manifesto, and for which we believe there is strong cross-party support.
That statement is this: “We will seek to strengthen the voice and representation of fans in Scottish football, to achieve proper independent scrutiny of governance and finance within our national game, and to make proper standards of transparency and sustainability mandatory for all sports clubs.”
From next week we will be urging all our members, and supporters from all clubs across the country to get the message across to our prospective parliamentary representatives: Scottish football matters – Vote Football!
