Mr Gray comes up with nothing before coming up with something…

By Donald C Stewart

A sketchy and humorous look at the outpourings of the great, the good and the not so good of Scottish fitba’ by Donald C Stewart. Readers are warned that if they take this seriously then therapy is available – just let us know where you find it so we can pass it on to others…

As Hibs returned back from their time in Kosovo, hoping that the credit card statements that are going to follow them are not going to show as much debt as being in Houston did, Hibs’ head coach Mr David Gray came forward. Before the dismal display ©major media outlets, Mr. Gray spoke eloquently of not preparing any sort of excuse if they failed to win. In short, he would not come up with any of that.

In fact, to be fair to Mr Gray, his team managed to mimic that on the pitch – nothing. Having managed to come up with not very much at all, they returned to Easter Road with a 2-0 loss. Skulking out of Pristina Airport, the Hibs team managed at Easter Road to salvage the tie with a 4-1 demolition – the antithesis to having “Hibsed” it…

This was remarkable given their lack of cutting edge up front in Kosovo. Mr widened his scope of coming up with nothing to provide something. It is something that the fans seemed to like, having disliked the taste of nothing.

But his disdain for nothing left me wondering. Many managers have fund themselves after their stint as a boss in the leagues, leaving without a plan for after the dugout. Has Mr. Gray found a new career pathway?

Will he become a critic down the Leith docks, as a foodie expert? Will he be found donnering round the docks, suggesting that the various eateries in the place are not as good as they should be. Will he opine they don’t have any sort of excuse given the rich produce that’s available, ergo they have nae excuse?

Perhaps with Edinburgh’s pure hunners o Festivals starting, instead of hanging about Easter Road you will find Mr. Gray hanging about theatre bars suggesting that what he has just seen has no excuse at all given the resource that they had at their disposal.

Or will Mr Gray find himself as a pundit, occasionally used by Sportsound on a Saturday afternoon to opine on which particular team he happens to be sent to, that they have no excuse at all given the number of resources, (always greater than what he had when he was at Hibs) they had to use from their bench?

When Mr Gray told everybody before the match that he was not going to have any sort of excuse and he was not going to come up with any of that at all, there is little doubt he never thought it would haunt him.

Because in the dressing room before the return fixture, he must have found an excuse, a reason, a statement of intent to rally the troops.

Two competitive games in and he needs to find an answer to the lack of consistency over 180 minutes. Even at home they could not quite compete for the full 90. One bright spot will be the form of bitter rivals Hearts who have lost their manager, their captain, talisman, reasons for believing, hope, faith, the list goes on but think they have retained the mascot and yon man who sang the song… small comfort perhaps for the nervous Hibs fans.
