Following the news that the SFA acknowledges there were 26 mistakes made in VAR in Scotland in the current season, coupled with the other news that Sweden has decided not to use VAR, we believe it’s time for there to be a comprehensive, independent review of VAR in Scotland.
The SFSA proposes that an independent working party be set up, including people and organisations that don’t normally work together (the, SFA, SPFL, SFSA, Supporters’ Direct, the Referees Associations, fans’ groups, etc.), under an independent chair, to conduct a full review of the working of VAR and, equally importantly, what the fans think of it. NOTHING should be off the table, including extending the use of VAR or the removal of VAR from the Scottish game until such time that it works seamlessly and so quickly that it removes that major issue (as virtually all admit) of sucking the joy out of the game.
We would like everyone supporters’ group, every banter page for your club on Facebook, every disabled supporters’ group, the SFA and SPFL, Supporters Direct and all 12 Referees’ Associations and private refereeing groups on social media to share this. If the media too could get involved, that would be wonderful. Surveys show across the world that fans don’t like VAR. Sweden has shown it’s not essential and that when fans act in concert they can make their views heard. It may be that if we do have a comprehensive review then fans will vote to keep it and amend it.
