Scotland end their time in Boston with a 1-0 loss against a highly rated Moroccan side, but their fate remains in their hands going into the final game. The team got off to the worst possible start after Morocco dealt a hammer blow after 71 seconds, Scotland then held on for the rest of the first half after they struggled to create meaningful chances. Che Adams had an opportunity to run through on goal but was fouled by Issa Diop who was seemingly the last line of defence, while a red card might have been given on any other day, a yellow was shown instead. However, we did threaten at the end of the half when Andy Robertson flashed a cross to John McGinn who sliced his volley wide.
A much-needed half time gave Steve Clarke the chance to inject some impetus into his side, this was seen right away when McGinn exerted a powerful run into the box, shrugged off a challenge and knocked it past El Aynaoui who lunged in on McGinn. The Moroccan didn’t get near the ball, and navy shirts flooded the referee to appeal for what seemed like a straightforward decision. However, like much of the night the Uzbek referee waved it off and VAR did not intervene, this began the start of what was an increasingly frustrating run of refereeing decisions that went against Scotland in the second half. After fouls in the middle of the park on Ferguson and McTominay, for example, were not given, it seemed like every 50/50 went against Scotland. The Tartan army were even more aggrieved when McTominay drove into the penalty area before being brought down, again only to be ignored by the referee and his team of VAR assistants. In the midst of the decisions, Morocco hit the bar, Ryan Christie missed a chance to test the keeper, and Scotland began to grow into the game.
The last 15 minutes was Scotland at their best, McTominay smashed the side netting and again came close when Gannon-Doak beat his man and delivered a ball into the box which McTominay got onto the end of before failing to strike the ball cleanly. In the end, Scotland couldn’t find the final piece of quality to equalise, but much can be taken out of the strong finish against a quality side. A defeat by one goal means that Scotland go into the last game with the potential to go through even with a loss. However, Scotland should go into their Miami match with confidence, after all its only 5-time World Cup winners Brazil…
