Scottish Fans top the charts again! – Tommy Marshall
Scottish football has another reason to celebrate this week. Last week we were following the exploits of the National Team with the SFA always there to take the credit when things are going well on the park.
This has been quickly followed up by the SPFL telling us that fans of Scottish Clubs are the best in Europe for attending games. In case you missed it catch the news here https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport/scottish-football-attendances-70-per-cent-higher-than-anywhere-in-europe-as-spfl-premiership-crowds-rise-5318258
Our Coefficient is currently dropping like a stone and despite the fact we have traditionally had a duopoly and precious little competition in the top flight since the days of the new firm ,maybe it is only right and proper that we celebrate this little victory for us fans. We know that the SPFL love to bring out these statistics every year to express how wonderful our game is, however it remains a very sad fact that this pat in the back is all the fans get out of the relationship. In England we have seen real progress in calling for fans to have a far more meaningful input into how the game is run. It is far from perfect there and they have a whole series of problems we don’t have, but what they do have is hope with the office of the Independent Regulator looking at how the governance in football is improved. Sadly, despite some of the efforts of this very organisation there is no evidence that the 6th floor at Hampden Park want to be more accountable to those who fund the game (us the supporters) nor have we seen any signs that there is a desire to be more accountable or transparent in how they run our game!
I would remind them that as old Granny Marshall used to say “self-praise is no honour” and maybe by the time the stats come next year they might actually do something meaningful for fans.
