In the past two weeks, there have been two glaring refereeing decisions involving the VAR (Video Assisted Referee) that have significantly impacted the outcome of crucial matches. These decisions were instrumental in Celtic clinching the Scottish Premiership title, sparking outrage amongst fans and leading to widespread criticism of the Scottish Football Association (SFA). Many believe there exists a systemic bias towards the Old Firm, Glasgow Celtic and Glasgow Rangers. This perception threatens the integrity of Scottish professional football and could jeopardize investment in the sport.
Football is not just a sport for us; it is a vital part of our culture and community in Scotland. The support for our teams brings us joy and unity, but disillusion and mistrust arise when transparency is lacking, especially in matters that turn the tide of coveted championship matches.
Football fans deserve to understand the basis on which crucial on-field decisions are made, particularly those involving VAR. It is unacceptable that the SFA referees, wielding significant influence over the game’s outcome through VAR decisions, operate without accountability or transparency. Transparency in VAR operations would not only restore trust within the fan community but would also uphold the essence of fair competition in Scottish football.
What we need is:
1. Mandatory public disclosure of VAR decision rationales in all professional matches.
2. A transparent panel to oversee and review VAR decisions made by SFA referees.
3. Regular audits of referees and their decisions to assess and manage biases effectively.
Implementing these measures would demonstrate the SFA’s commitment to fair play, assuage fans’ concerns, and help in maintaining the sport’s reputation on national and international stages. Our football deserves nothing less than complete fairness and clarity in officiating practices.
