A disappointing performance last night leaves the Scotland team needing results elsewhere to go in their favour. Again, Scotland were undone by an early goal, Scott McKenna was caught sleeping on the ball and gifted Brazil a goal which put them 1-0 up in 7 minutes. The defensive mistakes didn’t stop there, as Hendry’s complacency was capitalised on by Vinicius Jr who won the ball and slipped it past Gunn to make it 2-0. In contrast to the Moroccan game, VAR did intervene this time and rightfully ruled out the goal due to a foul on Hendry who should consider himself fortunate. Scotland could’ve done with getting into half time with the score just 1-0, however just before the break, some scrappy play on the edge of the box led to a Brazilian cross which was mistimed by Angus Gunn leaving Vinicius Jr to head the ball into an empty net.
Scotland found themselves 2-0 down at half time but had out possessed Brazil with 53% of the ball, this revealed how they floundered to create any threatening chances, lacking real purpose going forward. The build up was slow and suited Brazil’s patient and opportunistic pressing style and Scotland did little to change the tempo of the game or make the Brazilians look uncomfortable. The second half began with a McTominay header which landed in the hands of Alisson, the first shot on target the team has since McGinn’s goal against Haiti which seems a distant memory. The second half was, mostly, more of the same and some important saves by Gunn contained the scoreline but it wasn’t enough to stop Cuhna scoring a third goal. What the team seemingly lacked in quality, they did not in attitude or fight as they pushed to get a goal which would’ve landed them a better chance for qualification to the knockouts. No better chance came than when Ralston drove to the byline and played a ball into the six-yard box for McTominay who was close to getting an all-important goal but was denied by Alisson.
The game ending 3-0 and Scotland have ended on a goal difference of -3, having been outscored in the tournament by the Haitians, a grim reality. Despite this gloom, it’s been a World Cup of celebrations for the Tartan Army who have made the most of their first World Cup experience in 28 years and captivated the cities of Boston and Miami. To carry on the spectacular show of Scottishness in America and progress to the round of 32, we rely on one thing alone and that is hope.
