  • WESTMINSTER IS CALLING CROSS PARTY FOR AN INDEPENDENT REGULATOR IN FOOTBALL AND WE CALL ALL STAKEHOLDERS TO ENGAGE IN A PARALLEL AND OVERDUE REVIEW OF THE GOVERNANCE OF THE GAME IN SCOTLAND

DATE: 7th November 2023

The Scottish Football Supporters Association ( SFSA)  has noted with interest the Westminster Government’s cross party-decision for the introduction of an independent regulator in football in England. ( King Speech 7/11/23)

Over the course of the past two years we have consulted and worked closely with hundreds of stakeholders in the game as well as Parliamentarians at both Westminster and Holyrood as part of an inclusive  grouping called The Scottish Football Alliance.
Football needs change and for all parties to be part of the change and the future.

The Scottish Football Alliance Review published document calls comprehensively for a fundamental change to the way that our national sport is governed here in Scotland.

Whilst we of course understand there are many differences  in the size and scale of football in both England and Scotland, many of the fundamental flaws in a system where self-interest always and increasingly trumps the greater good of the game, is common to both countries.

We welcome the plans for a legislative programme being brought forward by the UK government to reform the game south of the border and support a parallel move in Scotland.

Since our Review paper was published in September it has been universally supported by those who want change.

We want a modern, dynamic, inclusive football  where good governance protocols are in place for the benefit of the football community from grass roots to our national sides.
We believe that changes are needed to ensure that ALL the stakeholders ( including football supporters) have a  meaningful say in what is a  vital cultural element and an inherent part of the social fabric of the nation.

SFSA Chairman Andy Smith said:
FOOTBALL it is part of the DNA of Scotland and the organisation of it needs reset because it is being hamstrung by inherent self-interest where it is run by clubs for clubs.
This means key decisions are made for the wrong reasons.
As an organisation we have worked for two years through our Scottish Football Alliance to help produce a positive proactive paper that maps out our vision of the future.
A vision that looks at modernising the governance of the game in Scotland. We will continue to work in the coming weeks and months to ensure that Scottish football  fans are not left behind in the race to modernise the game.
We will also work tirelessly with all the political parties to ensure that the much need reform here in Scotland gets kick started.
We will  continue to update all the stakeholders as further progress is made in the coming weeks
Football in Scotland is everybody’s business”
